US Army Criminal investigation Laboratory
SS&A Design Collective formulated the first expansion of the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory (USACIL) to provide space for the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) lab. This will accommodate the new CODIS mission for processing and storage of DNA samples and evidence of military criminal offenders. Processing expected to handle about 5,000 cases a year with a storage life of 40 years; capacity of storage to accommodate 200,000 cases. Processing requires storage of both DNA samples (vials of blood) and paper records and evidence. The CODIS expansion is located at the south end of the existing USACIL building. The design is an extension of the existing building (architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical). This Project was originally intended to be contracted as a change order to the construction contract for the new laboratory building, however, timing prohibited this and the project was bid as a separate contract.
