Environmental and Preventative Medicine Unit 6 Replacement Facility
The design provided a replacment facility for the Environmental and Preventive Medicine Unit (EPMU) 6 at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. EPMU-6’s mission is to maximize the combat readiness of operational forces within the Pacific Region by providing specialized environmental and preventive medical support. The facility includes four major zones: science, logistics, educational, and administrative. The Science Zone includes industrial hygiene and bio-safety labs for both Level 2 and Level 3 (BSL-2 and BSL-3) environmental analysis. The BSL-3 lab operates under negative pressure with an airlock zone for entry into the lab. The lab is monitored so the alarm sounds if negative pressure is lost and goes to even or positive pressure. The BSL-3 lab is exhausted to the exterior of the building. The exhaust air passes through a HEPA filter prior to exiting the building. The fume hood is also monitored so that an alarm sounds if the hood is opened and is not under the correct negative pressure.
