Medical Homeport Renovation Building 449 Naval Submarine Base New London
This project provided for the repair and renovation of various patient areas in the Medical Clinic, Building 449, at Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, CT. To better serve its mission as an Outpatient Clinic, many areas on the first floor of the facility were reconfigured to increase efficiency, improve adjacencies and enhance patient circulation. In addition, various deficiency tabulation items around the facility were corrected to more closely bring the facility in compliance with current codes and standards.
Building 449 is a five-story masonry-clad building that was originally constructed in 1973 as an Inpatient Navy Hospital. In the mid-1980’s the Inpatient mission was abandoned and the building was converted into an Outpatient only facility. Subsequently, a two-story addition was constructed adjacent to the original structure and housed a new main entrance and additional outpatient clinic space. This primary access, along with the previous main entry to the building, exists on the First Floor with a Ground Floor/Basement below; the remaining floors of the original building are above.
With the exception of the Public Health and Radiology departments and vertical circulation (stairs and elevators), the remaining departments and public circulation space on the First Floor of the Medical Clinic were modified to meet current space needs and operational flow. The departments included in this project are Medical Homeport, Immunizations, Referral Management, Medical Records, Pharmacy, Pathology/Lab, Undersea Medicine, Radiation Health, Individual Medical Readiness (IMR), Physical Therapy, and Chiropractic.
Renovation and repair is limited to interior spaces and any miscellaneous systems in support of these interior modifications.
