Addition / Alteration Vet Clinic, Building 500

SS&A, in a Joint Venture, prepared Design-Bid-Build documents for the Addition/Alteration of the Vet Clinic, Building 500, at Ft. Gordon, GA. Building 500 is a single-story building, originally constructed in 1967, that provides treatment and care for Military Working Dogs and household pets. Aside from a renovation/addition in 1994, the building has had only minor modifications over the years. The renovated Vet Clinic enlarged both the clinical areas and staff areas, while also separating the circulation for staff and patients to an “on-stage/off-stage” arrangement. This allows for improved staff workflow and patient flow, while also creating ideal functional adjacencies. The facility includes administration space, veterinary services with 4 exam rooms, an x-ray room and a procedure room, canine food storage and preparation area, four (4) large holding kennels, an outdoor walk area, and other support spaces. Two building additions added approximately 1,400 square feet to the existing 3,828 square foot clinic in order to bring the spaces up to criteria requirements and better meet the needs of the Program for Design.

The addition/alteration is a complete demolition and renovation of the building’s interior, with a refresh of the building’s exterior including new doors, windows, and canopies. Distinctive metal panel siding and split face CMU block were added along the main building elevations to enhance the look of the upgraded Clinic. In addition to functional and aesthetic improvements, the renovated clinic features all new mechanical, electrical, telecommunications, and fire protection systems. The project also removed the existing roof and raised the existing structure in order to provide adequate overhead (above ceiling) space for utility infrastructure. A new standing seam metal roof was constructed over the entire building, unifying the existing building and the additions.
