Intensive Care Unit Renewal, BACH
The renovated Intensive Care Unit (ICU) located on the 2nd floor of Building 650, Blanchfield Army Community Hospital (BACH), at Ft. Campbell, KY, is organized into three zones: Patient Care Zone, Patient Support Zone and Staff Support Zone. The project’s design incorporated four phases to keep the ICU operational throughout construction. The renovated ICU provides better patient and staff workflows within the department by separating onstage and offstage workflow areas, which removed backstage functions from the Patient Care Zone and allowed them their own circulation to access both the Patient Support Zone and the Staff Support Zone. Equipment Planning for the project included ICU arms and patient lifts. Architectural and HVAC design included integration of negative pressure for the ICU Patient Isolation Bedroom suite and positive pressure for the ICU Protective Environment Bedroom suite while maintaining the existing isolation bedroom suites until the new Isolation Room and the new PE Room were online in Phase 2. The Architectural and Electrical design included switchable privacy glass at the bedroom doors and viewing windows at the Nurse Charting Stations allowing daylight into the corridors and providing flexibility in the level of privacy needed. All ICU patient bedrooms in the Patient Care Zone were provided with daylighting and all spaces were brought up to criteria requirements.
