Working Dog Treatment Facility Replacement

SS&A was the Designer of Record for architecture, interior design, and structural engineering for the replacement Working Dog Treatment Facility (WDTF), Building 450, at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The design team delivered a modern, purpose-built facility that supports the unique needs of the Army Veterinary mission while improving overall site function and resiliency.

The new WDTF was carefully planned to enhance workflow, adjacencies, and patient flow for both staff and animals. The facility includes administrative areas, three exam rooms, x-ray imaging, an operating room, canine food storage and preparation, holding kennels, a small animal holding room, an outdoor walk area, and essential support spaces. A dedicated entrance for military working dogs and isolation exams allows the clinic to safely accommodate both working dogs and privately owned animals with appropriate separation and privacy.

Designed for long-term performance in a challenging environment, the facility incorporates resiliency measures for hurricane and seismic conditions, along with sustainable design strategies aligned with DoD Guiding Principles. The project also included phased demolition of outdated facilities, new site infrastructure, and restoration of the original clinic site back to its natural condition.

The result is a resilient, efficient veterinary facility that improves daily operations while supporting the health, care, and readiness of military working dogs at Guantanamo Bay.
