P160 Solid Waste Facility

SS&A was the Designer of Record for Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing and Telecommunications on the Design-Build (DB) project delivery team for the P160 Solid Waste Facility at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Our team provided the design of the HVAC, plumbing, and electrical power and lighting for two metal buildings. We also provided the design of the HVAC for a waste oil disposal system and provided the design for plumbing for a vehicle wash-down area. We provided design of telecommunications for the two buildings as well as outside plant design including service to the site from a remote location on the installation.

Plumbing design included domestic hot/cold potable water service, sanitary waste and vent and associated fixtures. Due to low supply pressure, the design required a water pressure boosting system. Water heating was provided by the waste oil boiler and supplemented by a solar system. HVAC design included direct expansion (DX) air handling units serving variable air volume terminal boxes with hot water reheat coils. Heating Hot water was produced by waste oil fired boilers. The building’s HHW loop provides reheat for the conditioned spaces as well as domestic hot water. Primary secondary pumping was designed with the HHW system. Electrical design included new primary and transformers to serve each building and other site elements. Exterior lighting consists of pole-mounted area/roadway lighting, using LED light sources and powered by solar photovoltaic panels. The Maintenance Building also includes optional standby power from a diesel engine generator set and automatic transfer switch. Telecommunications service conductors were brought to the site and divided evenly between the two buildings, using new telecommunications ductbank and manholes to the telecommunications backboard in the main Telecommunications Room (TR) in each building.
