Ambulatory Surgery Center, EAMC
The Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC), including PACU, was included in the project and located in a renovated area of the 3rd floor of Building 300. The project renovated approximately 10,500 sq. ft. area that previously housed the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Chaplains’ Office Suite, the existing PACU area and eight offices for Operating Room (OR) personnel (replacement OR offices were included in the PFD for the new ASC). The ICU was relocated to the 5th floor, and the Chaplains’ Suite was relocated directly across the hall from its current location, in what was previously the ICU waiting area and staff locker room. Renovation of the waiting and locker room area into new Chaplains’ Offices was included in the scope of work of this project (approximately 1,700 sq. ft.). Two adjacent Resident Sleep Rooms and a new Resident Lounge was also renovated due to the relocation of the Chaplains’ Suite. The renovated ASC follows the Patient-Centered Model where individual recovery rooms are used for both Phase I and Phase II recovery, as well as Pre-Op and Holding. This allows a patient to be assigned to one location where they will be held both before and after surgery. This is beneficial for the patient because it reduces the number of times the patient must be moved, and the ability to share staff and support spaces helps to maximize staff efficiency. Shared support spaces include Centralized Nurse Workstations, a Medication Prep Room, a Nourishment Station, an Equipment Storage Room, Soiled and Clean Linen Rooms and Staff and Patient Toilets. New interior finishes were chosen with durability and cleanablity in mind. Where necessary, new finishes matched existing finishes as closely as possible. Existing finishes to remain were patched and renewed where necessary. All finishes were reviewed with the building users to ensure their suitability for the area’s mission and function.
