Airfield Operations Building & Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT)

SS&A, as a subconsultant, provided architectural design, interior design, and cost estimating services for the conceptual programming through 35% design of a new Airfield Operations Building and Air Traffic Control Tower (AOB/ATCT) at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. This effort included the development of a DD1391 to secure MILCON funding, laying the foundation for a Design-Bid-Build (DBB) Request for Proposal (RFP) to be prepared by Redstone Arsenal Installation Management Command and USACE Mobile District.

The envisioned facility comprises a 7,700-square-foot Airfield Operations Building seamlessly integrated with a 3,700-square-foot Air Traffic Control Tower. Designed to support critical operations for the Department of Defense, FBI, and NASA, the project adheres to the Army Standard for Airfield Operations and Air Traffic Control Towers, classifying the facility as a Large Airfield Operations Building.

A collaborative charrette with project stakeholders established the program requirements and evaluated design solutions. Our team conducted an on-site assessment of existing facilities to understand current operations and verify building conditions. Through interviews with Redstone Arsenal personnel, we captured detailed operational needs to inform the design.

To ensure accurate budgeting, SS&A developed a detailed cost estimate using unit guidance and parametric estimating methods, refined with MII software during project development. Design deliverables, including BIM-based drawings created in Revit, reflected the meticulous planning and integration required for this state-of-the-art facility.
