our history
SS&A Design Collective was founded in 1946 when Chris J. Sherlock, an engineer, and Moreland Griffith Smith and Richard J. Adams, both architects, formed a partnership to practice architecture and engineering. They knew on the basis of past experience that an organization combining these two functions could offer more efficient professional service than separate companies.
In 1957, under the laws of the State of Alabama, a corporation was established as a successor to the partnership. Today, the founders’ legacy lives on. The firm is continuously engaged in the design of public and private facilities, from large-scale new developments to small interior renovations. SS&A continues to provide forward-thinking, competitive design solutions in an ever-changing marketplace. We also continue to promote the timeless philosophy of building strong, lasting relationships with our clients and business partners. We have the combined advantages of large-firm resources and the small-firm benefits of personal commitment and principal involvement.
