HVAC Mechanical Engineer Intern

Sherlock, Smith & Adams, Inc., a full-service Architecture & Engineering firm headquartered in Montgomery, Alabama is seeking a motivated Structural Engineer Intern who is career-oriented and desirous of long-term employment and advancement within the company.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science from ABET-accredited engineering program in Engineering.
  • Has already passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and eligible to be classified as an Engineer Intern by the Board of Professional Engineers (or EIT depending upon the state). *Acceptable FE exam categories include Mechanical or General.
  • Minimum college GPA of 3.0 overall and a minimum grade of B or higher in all Heat Transfer, Fluid Dynamic and Thermodynamics classes.
  • Desire to attain PE licensure.
  • Desires to be and/or has some experience (0-3 years) in the HVAC design of medical facilities.
  • Good communication skills are required, both verbal and written.
  • Candidate should have a working knowledge or training in Microsoft Office Suite 2010 or higher to include Word, Excel, Outlook, and BlueBeam (or Adobe Standard).
  • Ability to walk and stand at a construction site for extended periods of time (4 hrs +).
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • The successful candidate must be able to pass security clearance as well as a background check.
  • U.S. Citizenship.

How to Stand Out

  • Experience with Autodesk Revit 2015(+), Autodesk AutoCAD 2013(+), Autodesk Dynamo, Trane Trace 700, ASHRAE 90.1 energy compliance calculation software, ASHRAE 62.1 ventilation calculation software and standard pipe/duct sizing software.
  • Capable of producing a complete set of code-compliant construction documents that meet the owner’s project requirements.

What You Will Do:

  • Work directly under and report to the Director or Mechanical Engineering to produce project construction documents (drawings and specifications).
  • Perform day-to-day drafting of hand marks (or verbal direction) from engineering staff.
  • Perform relevant engineering calculations in order to size and layout systems (heating and cooling load, ductwork, pressure piping, medical gas piping, etc).
  • Interpret calculations in order to size and make equipment selections and then arrange each piece into a usable equipment room layout.
  • Execute and implement relevant drafting standards from the Department of Defense (USACE, NAVFAC, VA), National CAD Standard and similar variants.
  • Set up and maintain drafting templates and project files for each individual job project in order to produce project construction documents.
  • Family Creation, Block Creation, Schedule Creation (Including parameters for Revit), Template/Project Detail Creation.
  • Attend project planning meetings and site visits.
  • Use Revit and AutoCAD to produce details and drawings.
  • Interpret and apply national and governmental codes and standards.
  • Use Microsoft Teams to attend virtual meetings.
  • Regularly document experience in anticipation of applying for professional engineering licensure.
  • Work with management to establish, track and achieve goals based on project priorities.

Additional Details:

  • The HVAC Mechanical Engineer Intern position may be assigned to any of our 3 locations: Montgomery, AL., Auburn, AL. or Knoxville, TN. This position requires a minimum of 2 -3 days of work in the physical office (depending upon previous experience) per week. Work from home available on a scheduled basis.

HVAC Mechanical Engineer

Sherlock, Smith & Adams, Inc., a full-service Architecture & Engineering firm headquartered in Montgomery, Alabama is seeking an experienced HVAC Mechanical Engineer who is career-oriented and desirous of long-term employment and advancement within the company.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science from ABET-accredited engineering program in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the state of Alabama or able to attain registration via reciprocity laws within 6 months of employment.
  • Experience (5+ years) working with the HVAC design of medical facilities to include clinics (medical & dental), hospitals, and laboratories.
  • Proficient with DOD Unified Facilities Criteria and FGI Standards.
  • Proficient with load calculation software (TRACE 700 or eQuest).
  • Superb communication skills are required, both verbal and written.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, Revit and Microsoft Office Suite 2010 or higher.
  • Ability to walk and stand at a construction site for extended periods of time (4 hrs +).
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Able to pass security clearance as well as a background check.
  • U.S. Citizenship.

How to Stand Out:

  • Have detailed experience in the design and operation of direct digital control (DDC) systems for mechanical and plumbing systems. As well as the preparation of “Sequences of Operation” based on ASHRAE Guideline 36 or other industry-recognized standards.
  • Have detailed knowledge in the use and operation of Revit. Specifically in family creation, parametric schedule creation, and duct/pipe system design/sizing.
  • Have detailed design experience in Operatory Suites, Sterile Processing Suites, Chemical Exhaust Systems, and/or Data Centers.
  • Have advanced knowledge of energy modeling for USGBC, Green Globes, or other DOD accepted certifications.

What You Will Do:

  • Work directly under and report to the Director of Mechanical Engineering to produce project construction documents including drawings and specifications.
  • Help develop, maintain and ensure compliance with company standards for design and operation.
  • Work independently to completion as the engineer of record (EOR) responsible for all aspects of generating a code and/or criteria-compliant set of construction documents that satisfy the owner’s project requirements.
  • Attend project charrettes and meetings either virtually or in-person as well as site visits.
  • Collaborate with owners, users and other design professionals to develop minimum basis of design items.
  • Provide direction to and mentor junior engineers and staff to complete specific project tasks.
  • Conduct internal quality control and review processes.
  • Conduct field inspections of systems for conformance with design intent and construction documents.
  • Review and approve product shop drawings and submittals.
  • Generate punch list and deficiency list for contractor correction and any other item of contract administration required to ensure full and complete design/construction project.
  • Obtain continuing education credits as needed to maintain professional engineering licensure.
  • Obtain training to determine emerging technologies for company inclusion in future projects.
  • Technical leader for multiple simultaneous projects.
  • Ability to work with management to establish, track and achieve goals based on project and departmental priorities.

Additional Details:

  • The HVAC Mechanical Engineer position may be assigned to any of our 3 locations: Montgomery, AL., Auburn, AL. or Knoxville, TN. Work from home available on a scheduled basis. The position requires an orientation period in the Montgomery office at the beginning of employment. FTR may be considered depending upon experience after the initial orientation period.

Structural Engineer

  • Master of Science in Civil Engineering.
  • Licensed Structural Engineer (SE). *Based on passing the 16 hour SE exam.

What You Will Do:

  • Work independently to develop, analyze and design structural systems for buildings.
  • Attend project charrettes and meetings either virtually or in person.
  • Research professional literature for solutions to complex problems and translate ideas into actionable/executable plans.
  • Lead engineer interns and designers in the production of structural drawings.
  • Place your professional engineering seal and signature on the drawings prepared under your supervision.
  • Assist others in obtaining proposals and evaluating submittals from consultants such as geotechnical, blast, vibration and AT/FP (anti-terrorism / force protection).
  • Use Microsoft Word to develop design narratives as required by the government.
  • Use Revit, AutoCAD or hand sketches to develop information for details and drawings.
  • Use Revit to coordinate the structural system with other disciplines.
  • Interpret and apply national and governmental codes and standards.
  • Redline master structural specifications for project-specific requirements.
  • Review shop drawing submittals from contractors.
  • Obtain continuing education credits as needed to maintain professional engineering licensure.
  • Technical leader for multiple simultaneous projects.
  • Perform structural analysis and design of buildings using Bentley software products.
  • Ability to work with management to establish, track and achieve goals based on project and departmental priorities.

  • The Structural Engineer position is assigned to either our Montgomery, Alabama or Auburn, Alabama location. Work from home is available on a scheduled basis. The position requires an orientation period in the Montgomery office at the beginning of employment.
