navy drug screening laboratory (NDSL)
Naval Station, Great Lakes, Illinois
This project constructed a new, two-story drug screening lab. Sustainable design strategies were carefully incorporated into the facility’s design. Improving the indoor environmental quality was a key focus and was addressed in part by maximizing connection to the wooded west side of the site in order to provide views and natural daylighting into the labs on the first floor and work areas on both floors. The lab reduces potable water usage both outside and inside the building through the use of native landscaping which requires no irrigation system and low-flow plumbing fixtures which account for a 30% reduction in indoor potable water usage. Energy efficient lighting and mechanical systems contribute to an overall energy cost savings of 19%. The Navy Drug Screening Lab Great Lakes was recently awarded Silver Certification through the U. S. Green Building Council’s LEED® Building Rating System.
