Methodist Homes Corporation’s Birmingham, Alabama facility is being updated to replace the existing institutional appearance with a fresh functional layout of the 37-acre campus. This continuing care community will replace older garden homes and independent living apartments with new garden homes and a new apartment building which will become the new “front door” to the community, creating a new identity. Phase I will create a home-like skilled nursing environment and private rooms along with the renovation of assisted living buildings.
This project features a “household” design concept to enhance resident quality of life and transform the institutional campus appearance to a residential community with separate entries for independent living, assisted living, and nursing. Each “household” in the skilled nursing 20-22 bed units contain a living room, dining room, and residential kitchen. A “main street” promenade for social community functions, a specialty care assisted living controlled unit, and an Alzheimer’s unit is included.
