General Description

The Cottages are located within the Veteran Affairs Medical Center Campus inTuscaloosa, Alabama.  This project included the construction of aCommunity Center, whichis centrally located and serves as a focal point for the surrounding Cottages.  Each Cottage serves as a home environment for skilled nursing care.  Every Cottage includes ten resident suites and one guest room, a living room, a dining room, a large kitchen with dining option, and laundry and support areas.   The Cottages are connected to the Community Center by walking paths which offer views of the campus green spaces and landscaped gardens.  The Community Center provides social and recreational activities to the residents, as well as support spaces such as clinical and administrative areas.  Aesthetically, the Georgian Architecture conforms to the VA’s 1930 buildings, which are located adjacent to The Cottages.  The buildings were sustainably designed and then constructed to meet the USGBC LEED Silver rating.
