Nurses are in higher demand than ever before, and the University of Alabama at
Birmingham School of Nursing is working hard to stay at the forefront of nursing
education.
Through three separate renovation phases, Sherlock, Smith & Adams has helped to
transform the 41,000-square-foot ground floor of the School of Nursing, adding
a new Center for Nursing Research and enhancing lecture space.
In Phase I of the project, the south side of the floor was completely remodeled,
adding a grant preparation library, two tissue labs plus space for two future
labs, a large research meeting center, a doctorate student lounge, and abundant
storage space. Also, this phase saw the addition of a new mezzanine space for
administration and labs for an endowed chair.
Phase II of the project was comprised of the remodeling of the west side of the
floor, creating administrative space for the Center for Nursing Research. This
included thirteen offices, a lounge, a conference room, and various support spaces.
Also in Phase II was the addition of new glass vestibules through the building's
inner courtyard, linking the floor’s outer ring to the central tower of the building.
The last phase consisted of the enlargement of four classrooms on the east side
of the floor. The enlarged classrooms each seat about seventy students, providing
space for burgeoning enrollment. The lighting, arrangement and audio/visual capabilities
in the classrooms were greatly enhanced, creating a more flexible learning environment.
