Sherlock, Smith & Adams designed the Richard M. Scrushy Building at the University
of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) as a phased expansion of the School of Health Related
Professions.
The four-story building has 76,000 GSF of space to accommodate faculty offices,
laboratories and lecture spaces from four interrelated departments within the
School. Those four departments are Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Critical
Care, and Diagnostic & Therapeutic Sciences.
The building connects directly to the SS&A-designed UAB Learning Resources
Center and faces Unity Park. Students and faculty interact in modern laboratories
and media-equipped environments that push the envelope of medical education.
The building exterior, composed of brick, precast concrete and glass, is designed
to easily accommodate future upward and northward additions. The project was completed
in January, 2002.
