The three-story, $21-million Women's and Children's Hospital is a 180,000-square-foot
addition to the north side of Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Florida. The
original hospital was also designed by Sherlock, Smith & Adams in the early
1960's.
Among other features, this patient-centered facility boasts two twenty-bed pediatric
units, a ten-bed pediatric intensive care unit, a forty-two-bassinet neonatal
intensive care unit, twelve labor and delivery rooms, and thirty-eight antepartum/postpartum
care rooms. Additionally, the new facility houses the hospital's full-service
laundry and logistics warehouses.
SS&A developed a Medical Master Plan for phased design and construction
in correlation with the design of the original building. As part of the four-phase
expansion, the Women's and Children's Hospital combines with the existing buildings
to create a 400,000-square-foot complex. The phasing of the projects acted to
enable uninterrupted medical services throughout construction.
The designers set out to create a highly functional facility in a healing environment,
providing for the families of patients, as well as the patients themselves.
While providing for state-of-the-art equipment throughout the facility, SS&A
made a conscious effort to include headwall systems and cabinetry that would
hide the equipment until it is needed, creating a more intimate, homelike atmosphere.
A 50-foot atrium greets incoming patients and visitors with a comforting warmth.
During the day, the presence of skylights bathes the walls and floors of public
spaces with a natural glow. Glass block throughout the facility promotes privacy
while allowing natural light to penetrate the building. A playfully designed
rooftop recreation area is accessible to children and their families from the
third floor pediatric playroom.
