Sherlock, Smith & Adams was selected by The University of Alabama at Birmingham
(UAB) to provide renovation design services for a creative Learning Resource Center
(LRC). The center, jointly run by the School of Nursing and the School of Health-related
Professions, provides a learning environment for medical exams, case studies,
physical therapy education, collaborative work study, and computer resource activities.
Located adjacent to the Richard M. Scrushy Building, also designed by SS&A, both
the LRC and Scrushy Building were designed to work in conjuction with one another.
In order to provide access to all areas of the two buildings, corridor connections
were located on each of the LRC’s three levels, directly connected to the Scrushy
Building.
The project required complete demolition and reconstruction of two floors of the
existing three-story building. During that time, the third level maintained full
occupancy. Existing laboratories that were maintained on the third floor had services
traveling throughout the renovation areas on the first and second floors. This
aspect of the project required SS&A's team of in-house architects and engineers
to plan carefully around existing building systems to be retained.
In computer learning areas, indirect lighting and higher ceilings were implemented;
and dual wall air ducting was used to reduce noise in selected areas of the building.
Designed and constructed on time and in budget, the LRC boasted minimal change
orders during the construction process. The LRC is one of several projects designed
by Sherlock, Smith & Adams on the campus of The University of Alabama at Birmingham.
