The redevelopment of Broad Street, running through the historic downtown business
district of Gadsden, began a significant step in revitalizing the downtown core.
The process started when SS&A was retained by the City of Gadsden to prepare a
Conceptual Master Plan for six blocks of Broad Street. The Master Plan addressed
concerns brought about through public meetings and input from the City Planning
and Engineering Department. The plan improved pedestrian/vehicular circulation
through the use of mid-block crosswalks, end-block “bump-outs”, constricted driving
lanes, and protected gathering spaces. These design elements, along with street
trees, landscaping, site furnishings and street lighting created a unique and
unified streetscape for downtown.
After the adoption of the Conceptual Plan, SS&A was responsible for construction
documents and construction observation of the entire streetscape. Construction
was completed in the summer of 1999.
