The firm of Sherlock, Smith & Adams came into being in 1946, when Chris J. Sherlock, an engineer, and Moreland Griffith Smith and Richard J. Adams, both architects, formed a partnership to practice architecture and engineering. They knew, on the basis of past experience, that an organization combining these two functions is capable of offering a more efficient type of professional service than if they are provided by separate companies. The three founders are all now deceased, but the legacy of their beliefs lives on.

The Corporation was established under the laws of the State of Alabama in 1957 as a successor to the partnership. This was done to hold key personnel and allow them to acquire a financial interest in the firm. Sherlock, Smith & Adams, Inc., is a closely held corporation with stock ownership limited to key personnel. (In states which do not permit corporations to practice as architects and engineers, contracts are taken in the names of the appropriate individuals practicing architecture and/or engineering.)

The firm is managed by a Board of Directors that has the ultimate responsibility for all activities of the Corporation. The Board, elected annually at a stockholders' meeting, appoints the President, Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer, and other officers for the coming year.

Today, the firm is continuously engaged in the design of all types of public and private facilities, from large-scale new developments to small interior renovations. Examples of SS&A's design experience may be viewed on the "Our Projects" section of the website.
